Greater Still

apocalypse eyeCan you have a soft spot for the apocalypse? Well, too late. Revelation: I love it. Fire and thunder and beauty and Jesus! roaring from every page. No matter how bad things on earth feel (and let’s face it, January can be a beast), this blows the roof off. Like Lord of the Rings at the cinema – except it’s all true. And somehow, our lives – the routines and the prayers and the chores and the conversations – are woven into it. We’re watching this terrible, blinding and beautiful battle and there’s pain and confusion and darkness – but we’re clinging to Him – knowing, knowing that He has won it; even when everything feels lost.

Definitely a book for January.

As one year ends and another opens, what’s the Alpha and Omega for you? What has the power of life and death over 2014?

A family? A promotion? A holiday? A clean bill of health?

Or

– a Person: the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come—the Almighty One. Jesus.

He’s described in Revelation as ruler of all the kings of the world.  Which is nice, but doesn’t seem relevant.  After all, I don’t know any kings.  Not much call for world leaders in Sussex. But there are rulers in my life.  Folks whose words or actions have power over me. And – if I let them – over 2014.

The fertility doctor who brings bad news.  The deadlines I fear I can’t meet. The people I want to impress.  The friends I want to help.

How about you?

The boss who won’t let up.  The partner who threatens to leave. The panic attacks.  The eating disorder. Rulers, all of them.

But He is greater.

Greater than the empty womb.  Greater than the lonely heart.  Greater than the past and the present and the future. Why?  Because He holds them – and us – in His hands.

All glory to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.  He has made us a Kingdom of priests for God his Father. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.

Revelation 1:5
