Meaningless Motivations

motivation-topdemotivatorsThere have got to be better ways of motivating yourself than wall hangings and Disney quotes.

Most of ’em make me want to trample on fairy wings. Plus, they don’t make sense.

I give you;

Be Bold.  Be Brave.  Be You. I can do the third one. But I don’t see how it’s linked to the first two.

You’re the One who Can Fill The World with Sunshine. On a typical morning, I struggle to fill my coffee cup.

Choose A Life Less Ordinary.  1.I like ordinary.  2.What does ‘extraordinary’ mean? Lots of exciting suffering?  A weird tropical disease or gum infection? Being the only person to be hit by lightning four times in a row? It’s one thing if God thinks it’s a good idea…but why on earth would I CHOOSE it? And let’s say I wanted to – how does one suddenly make oneself extraordinary? That’s not on the poster…

There’s No-One I’d Rather Be Than Me. Sometimes, yes.  But all the time? In the butcher’s queue on Christmas Eve? Covered in stress spots before a big event?  Being fired? Breaking up with what you thought was The One?  Cleaning up the cat sick? Beam me up, Scotty.

Don’t just Fly, SOAR. Heights give me nosebleeds. And at eight months pregnant, walking would be good.

A Dream is A Wish Your Heart Makes. WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN? Someone put some words in a computer generator and spat them into a princess

Don’t Dream your Life.  Live Your Dreams. Last night I dreamt I was locked in a lift with some monkeys.  I’ll stick with what I got.

Give A Girl The Right Shoes And She Can Conquer The World. Too…angry..to..speak

Sing As If No-One Can Hear. I do. And even the cat begs me to stop

What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger. Nonsense.  It can make you stronger.  But it can make also you weaker, grumpier and a whole lot more selfish.

Success is a State of Mind.  Tell this to someone struggling with long-term illness or depression. And wear a flak jacket.

Enjoy the Little Things.  I like this.  Now, tell me HOW.

Trust Yourself.  You Know More Than You Think You Do. 1. Tried that, ended badly. 2. Probably – but my expectations are pretty low.

There’s A Big Blue Sky Waiting Right Behind The Clouds. Not in Northern Ireland. There’s more clouds behind those clouds.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
–James 1:5

For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
–1 Corinthians 1:25.

  1. Love it! Ps. You’re pregnant! Congratulations! haven’t read your blog for a while. I did a silent “Whoo hoo!” (because I am in the bath and my family will be confused with a random loud one)

  2. “I like this. Now, tell me HOW” is my oft-repeated cry when I am reading the bible/sitting in a sermon.

“Cast your burdens on to Jesus for he cares for you.” I like this. Now, tell me HOW.
“Be transformed by the renewing of your minds.” I like this. Now, tell me HOW.
“Do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” I like this. Now, tell me HOW.
“Take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ. I like this.” Now, tell me HOW.
“Rejoice in the Lord always.” I like this. Now, tell me HOW. Please.

(I’m by no means trying to imply that these are meaningless like the motivational posters – just that my response to them can be near identical…)

  3. Hi Liz: Yes – when you take these verses out of context they can become like demands. In their context, they’re addressed to whole churches and it’s the life of the community that fulfils them – a big clue for answering our ‘tell me how’ questions…
