The Pillow Parachute

"Sleeping in Mommy's Bed"Krakow, PolandThis is one of my favourite prayers.  It’s taped by my pillow, so it’s one of the first things I see (before the bills and the bad hair and the heart that says I’d be safer in staying in bed) .We use it at church as part of communion, and when I wake up feeling like the world is too much and I’m a mess and the world’s worst Christian to boot, it always picks me up.

Jesus, we come to this your table

not because we are strong, but because we are weak;

not because any goodness of our own gives the right to come;

but because we need your mercy and your help;

not because of anything we have achieved,

but because you died for sinners.

Glory be to you, our living Saviour and Lord.

When we come before God, we don’t need to pretend. We don’t have to prove and we don’t have to do.

Jesus knows we are not strong: but He is and he carries us.

He knows we’re not good: and He’s not shocked or surprised.

He doesn’t sigh or roll His eyes when we ask for help.  He’s there, waiting, with arms wide open. He has more mercy and grace than we have sin. He comes to us in our mess and He lifts us out and He gives us Himself.

So

if you’re weak and sinful and you can’t do it on your own and you don’t have any answers: don’t panic.

He is living. He is Lord. And He is for us.
